Schools

There are two International Schools in Kuching: Lodge International School, and Tunku Putra International School.

Lodge is located in Tabuan Jaya.  It is very central and easy to get to and is considerably cheaper than its rival (remember though – you get what you pay for;)).  Check out the Lodge Group of Schools here.

Most of the ex-pats that I know however send their children across river to Tunku Putra International School.  This is a great school that runs from Kindergarten through to Secondary School.  Due to the distance from town many ex-pats whose children attend TPS choose to live at Kasuma Resort which is a walking distance from the school.  Check out Tunku Putra here.

    • Hmmm, that’s a hard question to answer….eating out is cheap, buying Western goods at the Supermarkets not so. Rental for condos is around 2,500-5,000 a month. For a furnished house you are looking at about the same amount. School fees at international school are of course costly, you can check out the schools’ websites and their fees through our education page/tab. Purchasing a car is expensive here, you can hire them for the duration of your stay and are probably looking at around RM3,500 a month for a vehicle that would fit your family of 6. Sorry I am not particularly helpful, this is a very broad question and I would recommend you come for a visit first if at all possible and check it all out for yourself. In particular check out the schools in person as these will need to be meeting your expectations in order to make transferring your whole family worthwhile. Hope this is helpful:)

Thankyou very much for taking the time to reply to my post should we decided to go ahead with the move we may well have to look into leasing a car.Your website was very informative and answered loads of my questions not sure if we will manage a visit but have manged to view loads of footage on youtube, this would be our second posting overeseas as a family do you know if I would able to work out there.

    • You will be able to work if you find a company that us willing to pay for your work permit, ypu will then be with that company ie you are not allowed to work elsewhere. The company wilk need to.prove why you deserve the job instead of a local Malaysian. I have heard that they are changing the rules for those wives here on a dependent spouse visa (which would be you) to enable them to work. This was just something I have years tho, will find out when I renew my visa this year:)

Lodge school is cheaper and much better than TP. I have a friend who studies there now and she says the students can get away with a lot of thigs because the teachers are too scared to discipline these children of rich and influential people. As for rm2k rent….that is only because the kasuma management is trying to inflate prices. Queenie is notorious for this!!If you search you can actually find a unit for as little as rm1.3k if you do not go through Queenie. Try searching local listings and also pelita.gov.my.
