This week I have had an unfortunate reminder about this annoying, highly contagious sickness, and its repercussions.
Normally this sickness causes nothing more than discomfort for the child and they recover quickly and without any complications. In most other countries HFM is not considered dangerous, nor is it monitored like it is here in Sarawak.
Here, if your child has a case it will be reported to the Health Department by the diagnosing Doctor, the Health Department may pay you a visit to determine the source of the infection. If there are more than two cases of HFM at a school/preschool/childcare facility within a week, then that facility will be closed for two week. They take it very seriously here after an outbreak in 1997 which resulted in a number of deaths due to comlications.
